Learn More About Prescription Drug Addiction Treatment

Every day people go to their doctor for medication. In most situations, these people take the drugs exactly as prescribed, dosages at the proper time and frequency, and then stop when the course for the drugs is over. For some, however, prescription drug abuse becomes an addiction. Prescription drug abuse is the use of prescription medication in a manner that was not intended by the prescribing physician and can affect anyone, anywhere. There is an erroneous, yet prevailing belief among millions that simply because a medication was prescribed by a physician, it is safe. This could not be further from the truth. All prescription drugs have side effects, some more life-threatening than others, and for individuals who abuse prescription drugs, these side effects can cost them everything.
There are three classes of prescription drugs that are considered to be of high potential for abuse. Stimulants, such as Adderall or Ritalin, used to treat narcolepsy or ADHD, are used to provide boosts of energy and heightened mental acuity. Opioid narcotics, such as hydrocodone or oxycodone, are prescription painkillers used to manage chronic or extreme pain. These drugs often cause feelings of well being and joy to the user, which can be quite wonderful. Sedative/hypnotics, such as benzodiazepines like Xanax or Ativan, are prescribed for various anxiety and sleep disorders. These drugs are often diverted and abused to provide a sense of blissful calm relaxation.
Many individuals abuse prescription drugs together or mix them with illegal drugs to intensify the effects. Individuals who abuse downers, such as opioids or benzodiazepines often combine them with other respiratory depressants such as alcohol or heroin to increase feelings of intoxication. The combination of downers can lead to respiratory depression, coma, and death. Others mix uppers, such as stimulants, with downers, such as narcotics, in order to produce a mellow burst of energy and wellbeing. This deadly combination can lead to cardiovascular collapse and death.

Types of Treatment
Types of prescription drug addiction treatment offered at Options Behavioral Health System in Indianapolis, IN
When you come to us for help, you’ll first undergo a complete medical and psychological evaluation. The results of this medical examination will allow us to assess your body’s level of dependence upon drugs or alcohol as well as diagnose any medical conditions related to your drug abuse. The results of the psychological examination will allow us to determine if you’re struggling with co-occurring mental illnesses and the degree to which you are psychologically dependent upon prescription drugs.
If it has been determined that you are in need of proper detoxification before you enter into our inpatient addiction treatment program, you’ll first enter our medically monitored detox program. We know that the concept of detox can be very frightening for many people, so we are certain to explain everything we are doing before we do it so that there are no surprises for you. We’ll safely and effectively remove the prescription drugs in your system and ensure that you are medically stable and supported through the whole process. When you have completed detox and are deemed medically stable, you will transfer to our inpatient addiction rehab program.
Medications may be used at the beginning of your stay with us to manage unpleasant withdrawal symptoms or other symptoms that you may present with. Some individuals are able to taper down the medication as they learn more effective coping mechanisms while others may require long-term medication therapy to help manage any co-occurring disorders. The usage of medication will be determined by your treatment team.
Group therapy is an excellent form of therapy for individuals who are struggling with recovery from addiction. Working alongside your peers who are struggling with similar challenges, you’ll benefit from their knowledge and experience as well as process the emotions related to your recovery in a group setting. We offer both process-based and psychoeducational groups each day.
Addiction is a disease that impacts the whole family, so we aim to include your loved ones in your recovery from prescription drug abuse as much as possible. We’ll use family therapy sessions to educate your loved ones about your addiction, recovery, and continued sobriety. We’ll also use these sessions as a means to discuss the rifts in family dynamics caused by addiction and begin the process of slowly mending these challenges. In addition, we’ll provide your loved ones with referrals to outside resources to best allow them to continue to process and heal.
Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for prescription drug addiction
As all good things must come to an end, so must our time together. You’ll work alongside your treatment team to develop an aftercare plan that appropriately addresses your continuing care needs. If you have made enough progress to consider discharging to home, we’ll work with you to find a local provider for traditional outpatient therapy. Another option is to participate in a longer-term rehab program, where you can build upon the foundation and success you have created with Options staff. Our discharge planners will do their best to help you find a program that will work with your insurance and locate the best program possible.
